After graduating from a Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963) and then observing the liberal arts experience in my teaching career (Brown University, 1971-75), I am a believer in education which integrates the study of arts and studies of different subjects. Not surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! The ethnomusicology program that I began here in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music at the College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple interests is something I really enjoy. Both undergraduates and graduate students (for which I've written three textbooks - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experimenting Music and expressing Cultural Expression) enjoy my teaching. It is my case that I'm mostly a professor and other periods in where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as the Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988, the Dean for Undergraduate Advising, 1992-1998, and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science, 1994-1998).
